Embrace the Sun Safely: Why Rashguard Shirts Are Your Perfect Companion for Fun in the Sun

Are you ready to soak up the warm sunshine surrounded by a beautiful lakefront view or on a tropical sandy beach? Whether you're an avid swimmer, boater, kayaker, or just love spending time by the water, there's something undeniably magical about those moments. But amidst all the excitement, it's crucial to prioritize sun protection. That's where rash guard shirts come to the rescue, offering both style and practicality.

Rash Guard Benefits

Let's explore the often overlooked benefits of wearing rashguards while you enjoy your favorite water activities.

  1. Shield Your Skin from Harmful UV Rays: We all know that sunburns are no fun, but did you know that overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to long-term damage like premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer? According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, wearing a rashguard with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50+ can block up to 98% of UV radiation. That's some serious sun protection!  This benefit is near and dear to Kim's heart, since she has had to have MOHs surgery 3 times to have skin cancer removed.  Protect yourself!

  2. Stay Cool and Comfortable: Contrary to popular belief, rashguards aren't just for surfers. They are designed with lightweight and breathable materials that wick away moisture, keeping you cool and comfortable even on the hottest days. Say goodbye to that sticky feeling and hello to unrestricted movement as you dive, swim, or paddle your way through the water.

  3. Bye-Bye Irritating Rashes: Ever experienced the discomfort of a skin rash caused by rubbing against a surfboard, kayak, or lifejacket? Rashguards are specifically crafted to minimize friction, reducing the risk of chafing or rashes. Their smooth and flexible fabric acts as a barrier, preventing irritation and ensuring a more enjoyable experience on the water.

  4. Extra Coverage, Extra Confidence: Rashguards offer extended coverage, protecting not only your torso but also your arms from the sun's harmful rays. This added layer of protection not only keeps you safe but also boosts your confidence, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the water activities you love without worrying about sunburns or tan lines.

  5. Versatility and Style: Gone are the days when rashguards were solely functional and lacked style. Today, you can find a wide range of designs, colors, and patterns that suit your personal taste and fashion preferences. From vibrant tropical prints to classic solids, there's a rashguard out there to match every individual's unique style.

For Women

  1. Carve Quarter-Zip Rashguard - Ashley loves this UPF50 navy striped patterned option.  While she admits she would typically shy away from horizontal stripes, she loves the slimming effect that the rouching on the sides provides.  She also loves that the ties on the side allow you to tailor how high you want the suit to fall on your torso.  This option is also available in multiple patterns/colors.
  2. Seafolly Full-Zip Long-Sleeve Rashguard - This is Kim's pick for a high-quality rashguard.  She loves the classic and slimming look the black and white diamond pattern provides, and she values that this brand uses fabrics that do not  stretch, sag or fade over time.  A nice bonus in this option is a built-in shelf bra with lightly padded removable cups.
  3. Hurley Hooded Full-Zip RashguardKatelyn's favorite is this coral and orange monstera leaf designed shirt.  The shirt is UPF50 rated with long sleeves, available in multiple patterns/colors, and rated high on durability to hold up during vigorous watersports like wakeboarding and skiing.  Katelyn can't wait for her next tropical vacation, because she thinks this rashguard would also serve as a great lightweight jacket to wear to beachside dinners.
  4. Kanu Surf Tie-Dye Long-Sleeve Rashguard - Katelyn loves the nastalgic feel of this tie-dye version that comes in 6 different colors.  Kanu Surf is a swim and surf lifestyle brand, so their rashguards check all the necessary boxes of UPF50 sun protection, lightweight and quick-drying fabrics, and quality at an attractive entry level price point.
  5. Roxy Tropical Blue Drop-Hem Rashguard - If you are like Kim and you like a little extra coverage in the back, this Roxy drop-hem rashguard delivers.  Like all of the other options, it is long sleeved and rated UPF50 for sun protection.

For Men

  1. HUK Vented Performance Fishing Shirt - You can see that Eric, aka The Anchorman, is a huge fan of the HUK brand.  When it comes to sun protection, HUK long sleeve shirts are his first pick.  HUK fishing gear is especially designed to do more than just protect from the sun; they have added a special stain release treatment into the fabric since fishing can be dirty, and the fabrics they use include special fibers to transport sweat away from the skin and deliver superior breathability.  We couldn't find the exact print that Eric has, but this one is rated UPF30 and is very similar.  It comes in multiple color options.
  2. HUK Solid Long-Sleeve Rashguard Since a lot of swim trunks are patterned, it is good to have some solid rashguards to pair with them.  This shirt is rated UPF50 and has the same quick-dry and breathable fabric that HUK is famous for.  It is also available in 9 other colors.
  3. HUK Icon X Camo Fishing Shirt - This Icon X camo shirt is rated UPF50 and is one of the most popular HUK styles around.  Eric has had this shirt for a couple of years, so the exact print is no longer available, but we have provided links to several fun prints and camo options in the Icon X style.
  4. Quicksilver Short Sleeve Rashguard -  When snorkeling, this short sleeve version is Eric's preferred rashguard.  It is UPF50, and the snugger fit keeps the fabric tight to the body when swimming, wakeboarding, etc.

For Kids

  1. Hurley Long Sleeve Rashguard - Chaz says give me all the bright colors.  He has this rashguard in volt green with a colorful Hurley logo down the sleeve.  It provides UPF50+ protection with quick-dry fabric.
  2. Billabong Loose Fit Long Sleeve Rashguard - Basic black is always a good option to coordinate with any patterned swim trunks.  This is also a comfortable option for boys that don't like a rashguard to fit too tight.
  3. RuffleButts Pink Gingham Rashguard 2-Piece Set - When it comes to the girls, we are smitten with all of the options from RuffleButts.  They are so cute with the ruffle details and of course they deliver with SPF50+ protection.  But how cool is it that this rash guard set can even be personalized with a monogram?!
  4. RuffleButts Hot Pink Hearts Rashguard 1-Piece - Here is another adorable option that can be personalized.  Those ruffles on the tushy get us every time!  Is there anything more convenient than having your little mermaid step into this one-piece set, zip it up, and add the lifejacket?  She is ready to get her float on in no time with full long-sleeve protection.
